Gordon Moore, who was one of the co-founders of Intel noted in the mid-1960s that computers double in their capacity and their speed per unit cost about every two years. (source)

As bridge engineers, we have an extraordinary amount of computing power available to us. How do we leverage this computing power for efficiency to give California taxpayers and stakeholders the greatest return on their investment?

This question has been at the heart of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) effort in Bridges and Structures. In the presentation, we will share some of the ways we are adding value with BIM across the bridge delivery lifecycle from design to maintenance. (Please note that the content of this presentation does not constitute official Caltrans policy.)

On Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, we had an online presentation about this topic from engineers at Caltrans (their bios below). The recording can be watched by clicking the image below or watching the recording on our YouTube channel.
